The Guelph Jazz Festival’s Board of Director’s is proud to present a gala concert in support of the GJF’s educational and community programs. Join us for an evening of food, libations, a silent auction, and amazing music with Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Strings with special guest Matt Brubeck. Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble with Brent Rowan and Taylor Ho Bynum will open.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Chicago’s ground-breaking Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the Guelph Jazz Festival is proud to present Nicole Mitchell with her unique ensembleBlack Earth Strings. As well as being the AACM’s first woman president, Mitchell has been called “the most important jazz flutist of her generation … an innovative composer, magnanimous band leader and compelling soloist” (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz). Black Earth Strings shows all sides of this multifaceted artist, complementing the leader’sflutes with Renee Baker violin, Tomeka Reid cello, Joshua Abrams bass and Jovia Armstrong percussion. For this special performance, the ensemble is augmented by virtuoso cello improviser and Guelph residentMatt Brubeck, fortifying an unforgettable ensemble sound that brings African rhythms, contemporary improvisation and classic swing to a chamber music setting.
